In his exposé about social media on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, Demetri Martin explains different social media sites that are commonly used and a brief explanation of how to create and manoeuvre them. I have to admit that I chuckled a bit when he showed that he had 9000 friends. When he was challenged about how he was able to maintain “relationships” with so many friends, he said, “It couldn’t be easier!” All I could think was, How much time must you spend perusing the internet to be fully aware of what 9000 people are doing every single day?
This is where social surveillance comes into play.
